Round 9 / Race 1 – World Series by
Renault, Circuit de Catalunya, Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona, Spain (October 28, 2006) – Vancouver’s Sean McIntosh steered his #6 KTR entry to a
fifth place finish today in the first of two World Series by Renault races this
weekend at the home of the Spanish Grand Prix, Barcelona’s Circuit de
Catalunya, the Spanish track playing host to the World Series’ season
finale.
McIntosh’s
top-five finish further boosted his chances of solidifying a top-six finish in
the Driver Standings in an impressive rookie season by the Canadian racing the
425bhp Formula Renault 3.5-ltr open-wheel challenger, the 21-year-old holding
sixth overall heading into tomorrow’s final race nine points clear of Italy’s
Davide Valsechhi (53-42).
Race 1, Qualifying (Pole – Alx Danielsson (SWE), 1m26.788s)
Sean’s
performance in this morning’s qualifying session, where he posted the fourth
fastest time in his 15-car group, with a hot lap of 1m27.435s around the 4.6km
track, placed him on the fourth row of the grid for this afternoon’s race,
McIntosh lining up seventh with Christian Montanari alongside in eighth. Declaring himself relatively pleased with the
session, Sean’s form was evident straight out of the box in yesterday’s
collective test, setting the fifth fastest time in the morning followed by the
third fastest lap in the second session ahead of KTR team-mate, Great Britain’s
Robbie Kerr, and behind the Interwetten.Com pairing of Franck Perera and World
Series points-leader, Spain’s Andy Soucek.
Race 1, 19 Laps (Winner – Alx
Danielsson (SWE), Comtec Racing)
Holding seventh off
the line, McIntosh’s race was incident-free as he looked to make up lost ground
in the points having failed to take the previous start in Le Mans earlier this month thanks to a fuel
pump failure. Shadowing a heated battle
for fourth place involving Spaniard Borja Garcia and France’s Franck Perera, McIntosh
climbed to fifth as Garcia abandoned the race with mechanical issues. Sean collected six points at the flag for his
fifth place finish with Sweden’s
Alx Danielsson taking the win ahead of Andy Soucek and Alvaro Parente.
Sean McIntosh - #6 Team KTR:
“This was a hard
race physically so I’m pleased to come away with a solid top-five finish and
the accompanying points. I think there’s
more potential for a better finish tomorrow so if I can snatch a top-three in
my qualifying group we’ll be right up there.
Today’s result helps my chances of a top-six finish for the year,
hopefully tomorrow we can seal the deal!”
Race 2 (26 Laps),
with a mandatory pit-stop, starts tomorrow at 1pm local time (7am EST).
