Round
5 – World Series by Renault, Spa-Francorchamps,
Belgium
Sean McIntosh, #6 Team KTR, Race 1 –
Qualified: 7th / Finished: 2nd (12 points)
Canada’s Sean McIntosh collected his first
World Series by Renault podium finish today with an impressive drive to second
place behind Pastor Maldonado at the illustrious Spa-Francorchamps circuit in
Belgium. McIntosh overcame both an
engine change between qualifying and the start of Race 1 and trecherous track
conditions, thanks to an Ardennes downpour, to
record his best-finish of the season racing for the Belgian KTR squad.
Race
1, Qualifying (Pole – Pastor Maldonado, 2m04.058s)
On the pace from the start of yesterday’s
practice running at the 4.3-mile track, comfortably in the top-ten throughout
both sessions, Sean carried his rich vein of form into this morning’s
qualifying session to set the fourth fastest lap time in Group B, a 2m04.356s,
eventually lining up on the grid for this afternoon’s race in seventh following
Group A’s turn. The dry conditions
enjoyed for qualifying however wouldn’t last through to the race.
Race 1, 15 Laps (Winner – Pastor Maldonado, Draco
Multiracing USA)
Up to sixth from the 30-car field at the end of the first
lap Sean then showcased his prowess in the wet by passing Tomas Kostka into the
first hairpin to move up into fifth by lap four. An off by Sebastian Vettel at Raidillon
followed by Alx Danielsson running over the subsequent debris brought out the
safety car on lap five with Sean climbing to third place. At the re-start the
21-year-old Canadian got the run on Andy Soucek for second approaching the
daunting Eau Rouge turn, McIntosh making his pass stick to set his sights on
Maldonado in the lead.
A second safety car period followed and at the re-start Sean
got the jump on the leader but was deemed to have beaten Maldonado to the line
prior to the green flag and was forced to surrender the lead back to his
rival. From there McIntosh successfully
defended second place through to the checkered to stand on the World Series by
Renault podium for the first time.

Team KTR:
“This is a great result for the whole KTR crew, they did an
amazing job to change my engine between qualifying and the race. To be on the podium at a place like Spa is
just awesome!”
